What is Cyanoacrylate Adhesive?

Cyanoacrylate is the industrial name for what is commonly known as “Super Glue” or “Krazy Glue.” The quick-bonding adhesive can adhere to a broad range of materials, including plastic, metal, and even human skin.

Unlike water-based adhesive technologies, Aron Alpha adhesives are composed of alpha-2 cyanoacrylate monomers (liquid state). When this adhesive is spread thinly on the surfaces to be bonded, the small quantity of moisture on the surface acts as a hardening agent, rapidly turning the monomer into a solid (plastic) polymer and bonding the materials. This reaction occurs instantaneously, differing from water-based adhesives bonding that happens when the water evaporates.

Fast-Curing

Cyanoacrylate adhesives react quickly when exposed to water. The moisture in the air is enough to cause the glue to cure within seconds. The typical cure time takes approximately 10 to 20 seconds.

 

High-Strength

Because of polymerization, cyanoacrylate forms a high-strength bond. The strength of the structural adhesive can reach 20MPa. However, we would not recommend using cyanoacrylate adhesives for structural applications.

 

Exceptional Adhesion Profile

Cyanoacrylate adhesives can adhere to a wide variety of substrates, forming a strong and durable bond. It is compatible with ceramic, glass, composites, metal, paper, plastic, and paperboard materials. Since the adhesion profile is so vast, cyanoacrylates can also bond to human skin unless the person is wearing the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

 

Factors to Consider When Selecting Cyanoacrylate Adhesives for Manufacturing & Assembly

Cyanoacrylate adhesives are very versatile, and when selecting the best type for your manufacturing needs, it is essential to consider the following factors:

  • Viscosity

    The viscosity of a material is determined by its resistance to flow. For example, water has a lower viscosity than honey or oil, but oil has a lower viscosity than molasses or tar. Depending on how the adhesive is applied, the viscosity determines the amount of cyanoacrylate adhesive that needs to be dispensed onto the substrate.

     

  • Initial Set Time

    The assembly, working, or initial set time is the length of time an adhesive can be applied and removed or repositioned before extensive curing or setting takes place and creates a hardened bond joint. After this occurs, further assembly adjustments or movement is extremely difficult and could damage the finished bond.

     

  • Gap Fill

    Gap fill is the gap or spacing between materials that the cyanoacrylate glue can accommodate while maintaining a full-strength, functional bond.

     

  • Ultimate Tensile Strength

    The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) is the amount of applied stress needed to cause failure in a material under tensile load conditions.

     

  • Use Temperature

    This is the temperature range that cyanoacrylate adhesives can be exposed to without damaging or degrading the required structural or other end-use properties.

Industrial Applications for Cyanoacrylate Adhesives

Cyanoacrylate adhesives prove effective for a broad range of industrial applications. They are commonly used in machinery and automotive construction applications, particularly for securing plates or mounting controls.

Cyanoacrylate can also help with the manufacturing and repair of O-rings. Other types of neoprene and rubber gasketing including silicone rubber (when used with specialty primer) can also benefit from cyanoacrylate adhesives, particularly where bonding of differing materials would otherwise be hard to achieve.
